CSE Option in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science (CS) offers CSE Options in both the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. Students electing the CSE Option for either degree program are expected to satisfy all regular requirements for graduate study in CS. A student will normally be able to satisfy the requirements for the CSE Option by taking elective courses within the CS graduate programs.

M.S. Program

For the M.S. in CS with the CSE Option, the M.S. Distribution Coursework is modified so that the student must take one course from the Numerical Analysis course list, one course from the Software course list, and one course from either the Architecture course list or the Theory course list. In addition, one CSE course must be taken from a department other than CS. The M.S. thesis must relate to some aspect of CSE.

Ph.D. Program

For the Ph.D. in CS with the CSE Option, the following additional requirements must be satisfied: twelve hours of course work must be CSE courses from departments other than CS. Note that 500-level CSE courses may be used to satisfy the Advanced Course Work requirement. The Ph.D. thesis must relate to some aspect of CSE, and the thesis committee must include at least one CSE-affiliated faculty member from a department other than CS.
